the studio today. paul? thanks chuck. good to be here. meantime in washington, though tax rates on the really rich may be getting all the attention, if there is no fix to an obscure corner of the tax code, millions of middle class americans will pay thousands more to uncle sam. the alternative minimum tax, or amt, is typically paid by just 4 million americans, but no action in washington would mean an additional 30 million americans would fall under the provision. affected households would then have to pay $3700 more in taxes this year. cutting this deadline close has practically become an annual holiday tradition for congress the past few years. 'back in 2010, they passed the amt patch on christmas eve. in 2008/2009, they actually passed it in january and set it retroactively. uncertainty surrounding the amt has the internal revenue service on its toes. the tax agency has warned congress that if no new policy is passed, the irs will need to reprogram its computers, forcing a delay in filings and tax refunds until march of 2013. president obama and members of congress are set to re

continue to watch washington and talks on the so called fiscal cliff. november job numbers are also due out tomorrow. jobless claims fell sharply last week. the labor department said applications fell to 370,000. claims had temporarily spiked last month after superstorm sandy. analysts say the effects of the storm are still being seen in the four week average which stands at 408,000. >>> there is new information tonight about an albany middle school teacher who killed himself after being accused of sex allegations. 28-year-old james isam saki killed himself in september after police arrested him and searched his home. since then there has been debate about the extent of the crimes. according to court documents unsealed today, he exchanged thousands of flirtatious messages with an under aged student along with open mouth kissing and fondling on campus. police say there were several victims. >>> police in mountain view have just released photos of an i.d. theft woman. the woman is impersonating a customer in downtown maintain view. the woman made unauthorized withdraws totaling $20,000. t

vacation short to face the fiscal cliff. is he leaving hawaii for washington tonight. if lawmakers don't come up with a deal before the deadline your tax refund could be delayed by months. we are live in the washington bureau to explain more. >> reporter: brian the irs said without a deal as many as 100 million taxpayers may be forced to wait until march to file their tax returns. congress has to vote on the wealth tax and it needs to be adjusted for inflation. both partisay they would agree to it but it's all tied up in the fiscal cliff mess. tax filing season starts next week but the irs would put a hold on that for some. officials would wait for a deal in the new year instead of doing serious reprogramming to their tax system. filing would then be pushed back to march for millions. with refunds coming much later than usual. especially for those who plan on paying off credit card bills that often pile up after the holidays. now all of this could be avoided a deal before the deadline monday night but some long time lawmakers fear it won't happen, more on that when i see you next.
